Outcome: Initial Outcome

Learning to sew is a real-life engineering and construction project. Clinical studies have found that students who learned to sew a simple project showed elevated creativity after the activity. In addition, these individuals who learn to sew may also be developing skills for a fulfilling, stress-relieving hobby. Bullitt County had many youth who were interested in learning to sew. 4-H planned with homemakers to offer a 4-H Sewing Camp during the summer and no school days. After meeting the youth and seeing their skill set one of the homemakers decided to become our 4-H club leader.

Youth and parents contacted 4-H and asked what we could do to start a Sewing Club.   Homemakers and 4-H planned camps to see how many youth would be interested. A goal was find a leader and have at least 5 members the first year. The club had 5 leaders and 24 members the first year. The leader offered beginner projects that led to the members entering quilts in the county fair. Many went on to the 4-H State Fair and got blue and champion ribbons. Also one of our members is now assisting the leader with helping the others learn sewing skills.
