Research has shown that youth leadership development can have positive effects on behaviors and skills including communication, problem solving, conflict resolution, and goal achievement (21 Progress). Each of these skills is linked to higher student achievement, lower drop-out rates, and better post school outcomes. For these reasons, The Boone County Cooperative Extension Service offered youth leadership programming to students at Yealey and Mann Elementary Schools. 58 students (selected by the teachers) from the 4th & 5th grades participated in a series of classes focusing on leadership, teamwork, personalities, and communication skills. From a written evaluation, 100% of the students said they strongly agree or agree they have better communication skills, 95% marked strongly agree or agree they have a better understanding of personality differences, and 87% marked strongly agree or agree they have a working knowledge of learning style differences.
