Rising Chefs Learn Culinary Skills

Creating a healthy community starts with preparing youth with skills to make positive decisions about their lifestyles. Youth who knows how to interpret a recipe, modify it as necessary, and select healthy ingredients will have a better understanding of how to make wise health choices.

Green County 4-H sought out the Super Star Chef program to offer these important skills to our youth. The three-day intensive camp introduces youth to new foods as they prepare healthy dishes like fiesta dip, fruity parfaits, veggie pizzas, and carrot muffins. Safe kitchen skills like proper knife handling techniques and handling hot utensils are also covered.

The program offered by the Kentucky Nutrition Program provides like skills and a foundation of knowledge for the next generation to make wise decisions about their health.  The fourteen participants were from grades three through seventh.  Only half of the group knew the amount of physical activity need on a daily basis on a pretest; at the conclusion, all youth could identify the proper amount of exercise and describe youth, fun ways to stay active.
