Horticulture Therapy is defined as the art of cultivating plants to promote the well-being of humans. It is the use of horticulture activities that are used to enhance therapy and rehabilitation efforts but it is also useful to help enhance overall health and individuals overall well-being. The Horticulture agent and the Nutrition Education Program (NEP) Assistant in Boyd County partnered together to offer a Recovery Garden program with the residents of Sanibel House, an addiction recovery program facility in Catlettsburg. Addiction recovery programs in Eastern Kentucky have more than doubled in the past 10 years due to the steady increase in the drug epidemic in this area of the United States. The NEP assistant started programs with the residents of Sanibel House, one of the local recovery centers, on healthy lifestyle choices which led to the idea of offering the gardening program. With the recovery garden program they are able to target the psychological area of giving an individual a sense of worth, promoting a nurturing attitude and helping them to learn to take responsibility for something. The social area is also targeted by increasing or improving their social interaction with others and working towards a common goal. The work this program has been able to accomplish with these residents was recognized by local and state leaders and on August 9, 2019 they Kentucky House of Representatives presented the residents of Sanibel House a Citation of Appreciation for their hard work on these gardens and their program. Gardening or gardening related activities allows a person to be a part of something bigger – they connect with nature, their community and life through gardening and the lessons they learn.
