Major Program: 4-H Youth Development Programming

Plan of Work: Leadership Development

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Through 4-H, kids experience a variety of opportunities that support developing leadership skills, building self-confidence and experiencing a sense of belonging. Positive youth development studies have found individuals involved in 4-H, compared to other students, are two times more likely to be civically engaged in their community, four times more likely to contribute to their community, two times more likely to make healthier lifestyle choices, and research has also revealed other positive findings. Participating in 4-H clubs, projects, and enrichments programs can help youth gain these skills and apply skills learned to real life situations.

Youth strengthening leadership and self-confidence has been a concerning topic expressed among the County Extension Council, 4-H Council, and local leaders in Clay County. To support this concern, the 4-H Agent implemented in-school clubs in 4th and 5th grades that specifically focus on strengthening leadership and building self-confidence skills. Approximately 223 students gained knowledge on electing club officers, basic parliamentary procedures and roles associated with each officer position. Through each club meeting, students were able to gain new skills through conducting club meetings, gaining confidence through public speaking, and participating in leadership roles.

Results revealed the following information:

88% Reported feeling more comfortable when conducting a club meeting

90% Reported being more confident when speaking before their class

92% Reported enhancing leadership skills

97% Reported their in-school 4-H club was a positive learning experience
