Planning Unit: Knott County CES

Major Program: 4-H Agriculture Core Curriculum AND Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Practicing stewardship in natural resources.

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

According to the Knott County Report of the Kentucky Community Assessment, Knott Countians felt that “less littering and illegal dumping” was in the top 10 of their priorities for the betterment of our county.  To help address this issue Knott County 4H presented at the 2019 Environmental Fair along with 10 other community partners on various environmental topics.

Knott Co 4H with the use of an enviroscape aka “bird’s eye view” of a region including various pieces of the community, taught youth how to identify possible sources of pollution and littering.  The youth then made predictions on the effects of those pollutants.  Witnessed how pollution from various sources effect water quality.  Finally, they resolved the issues of pollution by recommending as a group, various ways to prevent and offset the sources of pollution to avoid the illegal dumping, littering and other environmental hazards.  The students also discussed the various ways they could implement these techniques into their everyday lives and were challenged to do so.

This was a collaborative effect with the Army Core of Engineers at Carr Creek Lake and 10 other community partners, reaching a total of 120 youth ages 9-11.
