Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The focus of all 4-H programs is the development of youth as individuals and as responsible and productive citizens. The National 4-H Shooting Sports Program stands out as an example. Youth learn marksmanship, the safe and responsible use of firearms, the principles of hunting and archery, and much more. The activities of the program and the support of caring adult leaders provide young people with opportunities to develop life skills, self-worth, and conservation ethics. (National 4-H Shooting Sports).
For fifteen years, 4-H Shooting Sports Club has offered opportunities to all youth ages 9-18 in Mason County. Youth learn invaluable skills of not only handling firearms safely, but also leadership and communication. Participants meet at the range for practice a few times a month in the disciplines of shotgun (trap), rifle, and archery. The club elects officers each year that hold leadership roles within the club. On average, this club serves 40 youth per year. The Shooting Sports year begins in January with a new member safety meeting, where Maysville police come to aid in teaching safety alongside our certified leaders. The State Shoot is the culminating event that happens in early September. This club, along with every other 4-H opportunity, is all-inclusive. We currently have the privilege to serve two youth who have cerebral palsy. Watching these young people shoot a bow and arrow using their teeth is amazing. The determination and drive they have to improve their skill is inspiring. One member of the club stated “this club teaches me more than just how to shoot a gun. I have made new friends and I get to go to competitions to test my skills which I really like”. The welcoming environment fosters relationships and encourages everyone to make new friends.
