Major Program: Healthy and Safety for Ag Producers/Workers

Plan of Work: Producer and Consumer Safety

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In 2014, approximately 23,883,000 youth visited farms. Of all youth deaths in agriculture, machinery, motor vehicles (includes ATVs), and drownings were the top three causes in that order (www.cultivatesafety.org). With this data, the Agriculture and Natural Resources agent decided it was time for the youth of Cumberland County be exposed to the agriculture safety. A grant was applied for to host a Progressive Agriculture Foundation safety day and it was awarded. The event was held on September 26, 2019 at the Cumberland County Elementary School for fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students. Participant ages ranged from 9 to 14. Students were able to visit booths about water safety (Army Corp of Engineers), chainsaw safety (Department of Forestry), gun safety (4-H shooting sports coach), first-aid safety (EMS), proper smoke alarm usage (fire department), water hydration, sun safety, and reaction time (Extension Service).  Students were also able to participate in the Roll over Tractor demonstration presented by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. Of those students that attended, 76% indicated on an evaluation that they liked the day. Sixty-three percent indicated they learned more than in a regular school day. A few items that students indicated they would do to be safer were, have a roll bar on the tractor, apply sunscreen or wear long sleeves when outside in the sun, always turn off engines before getting off of equipment.
