Plan of Work: Youth in Agriculture

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Mastery is an important life skill that encourages youth to believe they are capable and successful at solving problems and meeting challenges.  The University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service via the 4-H program provides ample opportunity through the 4-H Horse Program to experience many different levels of mastery.  4-H members in the 17 county Extension District 6 region of the state have the opportunity to master skills in twenty different district/state events.  These events include: Horse Judging, Hippology, Horse Bowl, Horse Camp, Horse exhibition, Photography, Public Speaking, Demonstrations, and Crafts.  This reporting agent coordinates programming on the district level for nearly 150 youth.  These youth have the opportunity to master skills on the county, district, state, and national levels.  Educational opportunities such as horse camp and horse club meetings provide youth knowledge and skills of horse subjects.  In turn, the youth apply these skills to district and state horse contests.  This year, the youth in the Extension District 6 mastered horse related skills by placing in the top ten at the State 4-H Horse Competitions 512 times with 104 state champions.  On the local level, 24 Warren County youth earned 148 top ten awards with 45 state champions.
