In the United States, the leading cause of death in teens ages 15 to 18 is unintentional/accidental according to a 2017 CDC report. In an effort to educate teens on practicing safety, the Bracken County 4-H, Bracken County FFA, the Bracken County Soil Conservation, Bracken County Fire and EMS, and Kentucky Department of Agriculture teamed up to bring the Pep Rally for Life to BCHS. In an effort to stress to teens that accidents do occur and they are not invincible, a mock 4-wheeler accident scene was staged. We also had a guest speaker from the community. He talked about an accident that he had on a 4-wheeler and stressed to the teens that accidents do occur! Students from both Augusta Independent Schools and Bracken County High School witnessed the accident scene and the first responders in action. Afterwards the students, got to see a tractor roller over demonstration to encourage the use of ROPS. Bracken County is primarily rural so teens are exposed to 4-wheelers and tractors on a daily basis. All youth that participated and witnessed the mock accident, took away one thing…that they are responsible for their safety!
