Major Program: 4-H Agriculture Core Curriculum AND Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Since joining the Letcher County Extension Service as the 4-H Youth Development Agent, youth expressed a desire to have a horse club. When folks would ask why we do not have a horse club. I would have to say because, we do not have a certified leader that wants to take the lead and be the club leader for the horse program in our county. Leaders have stepped up and know seven are certified and a partnership has been made with the farm at The Stables at Creekside Glen. We have so many youth that we meet several different times a month with the 13-19 age youth. The 9-12  meet once a month at the extension office and once a month at The Stable at Creekside Glen. The older youth mentor the younger group when we meet at the Stable at Creekeside glen. This has created some great youth adult mentor-ship and older youth to younger youth mentoring. The club started in September of 2019 with fifty registered 4-Hers and by May of 2019 Letcher County had youth to compete in the District horse show and then on to the state horse show. The club at the first meeting of the month has a business meeting with the educational program related to equine health, care, and safety. The second meeting of the month focuses on the training and riding component along with the safety and and care that was taught at the first meeting of the month. The group has such wide age ranges from 9-19 mostly females with 45 females and 5 males. Not all of the members own a horse they use a horse at the Stables and they can adopt that horse for the season. This allows the youth to see if they are ready for the commitment of their own horse. Some of the youth do not have the land, barn, or  equipment that it takes to have a horse, so this gives them the opportunity to create a bond a horse and fulfill the passion that they have for equine without owning a horse. Right now all members that ride at The Stables at Creekside Glen are riding in speed events barrels, poles, flags, steak races.  We have members that are interested in the show side our goal for this year is to leader that will become certified and willing to share knowledge with the youth. All of the youth that are members of the Letcher Lopers are not members of another horse club some are even new members to the 4-H program all together.
