Major Program: Agriculture 4-H Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Youth Agriculture Education

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The amount of farmland in Campbell County continues to decline each year.  87% of the citizens of Campbell County live in urban communities.  This increasing population has limited understanding or appreciation for the importance of agriculture in our daily lives.  To address this issue, the Campbell County Cooperative Extension Service developed an agriculture awareness and education  program called "Grow It, Eat It, Wear It" that targets fifth grade students.  This week long program was held September 25-29 at the Alexandria Fairgrounds.  This year the Cooperative Extension Service Agents, Owen Prim and Don Sorrell, collaborated with the Beef Cattle Association, Bee Keepers Association, Farmers Market Association, Kentucky State University Aquaculture Program, Sheep and Wool Growers, Northern Kentucky Horse Network and 4-H Horse Leaders to carry out this program.  The Campbell County Extension District Board supported this program by granting a $5000 Special Programs request to fund the program.  616 youth and 148 adults from 11 county schools attended this educational program.  Participants got to see, touch and learn about live farm animals, taste honey, watch sheep being sheared, spin wool and learn how agriculture provides them with food, clothing and shelter that they need and depend on every day.  On written evaluations, 100% of the school teachers and chaperones rated this program either very good or excellent.  Comments included: "students were very engaged and exposed to information they would not have gotten without this program".  "Both students and adults love the hands-on activities".  "This is always one of our favorite field trips because it covers multi curriculum objectives and standards".
