How would you rate as a bird? …..

…..Was just one of the activities included in the recent 4-H Natural Resources programs offered the 7th graders at Hazard Middle School.  The entire grade level visited the EKY Raptor Rehabilitation Center of the Letcher County Cooperative Extension Service in Whitesburg. Youth were introduced to several of the “forever friends” that aren’t able to care for themselves in the wild any longer as well as hear of the many species that have been nursed back to health and set free.  Mitch Whitaker heads up the center’s operation and is a falconer as well. He enthusiastically explained the various habitat requirements each bird needed to survive and what it would take for humans and these wonderful birds to share space in this world.  Other activities in the program lead by this agent included the youth working in groups to create the food webs that would include the various raptor species and other fun facts about our winged friends.  Perry County teen leader, Alexa Deaton, was also on hand to assist the program. She is one of the teens that contributed to securing the county’s Teen Issues Conference  grant this year and included this programming effort.  All the school's 7th graders, 57, and 7 leaders participated in this four hour program.
