Entreprenuership

Planning Unit: Powell County CES

Major Program: Family and Consumer Sciences 4-H Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Addressing Family Life Needs

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Teachers from the Powell County School System requested Powell County Extension staff to conduct monthly lessons with their 4-H club meetings on subjects that are being covered in class.  Powell County Extension staff developed and conducted an entreprenuership series with all the 5th grade classes in Powell County to re-enforce concepts learned in the classroom setting.  All Powell County 5th grade classes participated.  Over the course of the school year, students learned about business types, profit, loss, marketing, pricing, etc. by "forming their own 4-H business".  Students could work together or solely to plan a successful "ice cream truck" business.  At the end of the school year, students had designed shirts and signs; evaluated costs and set prices; and had a sale day to see which "business" could make the most profit.  Powell County Extension Staff provided the actual supplies that each group ordered and facilitate a sale day at which time the 5th grade businesses could sell their product to participating 4th grade students (with fake 4-H dollars).  The goal of the sale is to make a profit.  This was a wonderful real world application of classroom concepts which really helped youth to understand profit, loss, the importance of marketing and serious consideration to pricing in entreprenuership.  Nearly all youth stated they would like to do the activity a second time to try to correct the errors they made. All teachers expressed their appreciation for this activity and its real world approach to hands on learning about such a difficult subject.
