The “2016 – Kids Count” ranks Ohio County 91st in child well-being. Similarly, the CDC’s 2015 “Youth Risk Behavior Survey” for Kentucky, highlighted several key areas of concern:

  • 8.5% did not eat vegetables within 7 days of the survey
  • 63% did not have 60 minutes of activity, on 5 or more days per week – with 79.8% not having physical activity in all 7 days prior to the survey
  • 17% were overweight
  • 35% of adults were obese, compared to 25% for Ky

Thus, increasing physical activity and healthy eating habits for youth and adults, are the most important factors for improving health in Ohio County's “Longest Day of Play”, which held its’ 12th  annual event in 2019 in Ohio County, is a cooperative effort of the Ohio Co. Schools, Ohio Co. Healthcare Ohio Co. Extension Service, Wal-Mart, Perdue Farms, and the Ohio Co. Early Childhood Council, with the following goals:

  • Increase physical activity in the family – youth & adults, with family oriented activities
  • Increase consumption of healthy food choices
  • Highlight economical physical activities, for the family, that can be replicated at home

1530 youth and adults participated in the 50 activity stations, which were managed by over 100 volunteers. These activities were designed to be low cost or homemade activities which families could create at home, while providing physical fitness for improved health.

A survey of participants indicated the following impact due to the “Longest Day of Play” program:

  • 86% have physical activities at least 3 times per week, with 36% having activities 6 times or more per week.
  • 91%  do physical activities they learned at “Longest Day of Play” each week at home
