Major Program: Commercial Horticulture

Plan of Work: To help foster the development of marketing, production, and managment skills within the area.

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Fruit and vegetable production sales at the Fairview Produce Auction, servicing Christian and Todd county farmers, exceeds $3 million annually. However to remain profitable growers need training on best management practices and proper use of pesticides. To meet this need members of the Fairview Educational Committee partnering with the Cooperative Extension Service in Christian County and University of Kentucky specialists sponsored a Twilight Tour training. Topics included a demonstration on sprayer usage on melons; a seminar on strawberry production and panel discussion on packing and grading produce. Ninety growers participated in the training. Growers were given a survey and asked to reply to three questions. 96% of growers indicated they have situations in their farm business where they could use what they learned at the training. 92% indicated they will make a practice change. 88% indicated the information they learned will help them be more profitable.
