Flower Production Meeting

Author: Kelly Jackson

Planning Unit: Christian County CES

Major Program: Commercial Horticulture

Plan of Work: To help foster the development of marketing, production, and managment skills within the area.

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Flower sales are an increasingly growing commodity in Christian and Todd counties. However, to remain profitable growers need training on management practices including reducing heating and cooling costs for greenhouses. To meet this need members of the Fairview Educational Committee partnering with the Cooperative Extension Office in Christian County sponsored a flower production training which included local growers and speakers from the University of Missouri and the University of Kentucky. Evaluation was measured on what changes growers planned to implement because of the training. Sixty-two growers participated in the training. Participants were surveyed following the classes and 93% indicated they felt somewhat or quite a bit more able to save energy on heating and cooling their high tunnel or greenhouse this season. In addition, 11 growers indicated they would make a practice change because of the training including installing automatic curtain walls in their greenhouse and working to improve circulation of their greenhouse.
