This Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Educator was asked by one of the county agriculture teachers to help with an educational program for her vet science high school class. With the big increase in small animal interest in veterinarians the ANR agent decided to ask a local vet for help. In the classroom we demonstrated how to use an ultrasound machine on a pregnant dog to determine pregnancy. During this process students learned the importance of handling animals, how an ultrasound machine was used and its many uses, as well as the stages of gestation and development of canines. With the use of technology images were shown with a projector on a big white board. Students witnessed fetal heartbeats as well as some puppy growth stages. As a follow up x-ray images of the same pregnant dog were used later in the class to show the day by day development of the puppies. At the conclusion of this school year one student contacted the ANR agent to give her gratitude and tell her story of changing her career path in college towards becoming a vet because of this program and demonstrations done in that classroom.
