Senior Citizens "Lettuce" Teach Ways to "Beet" Nutritional Diseases

Author: Angie York

Planning Unit: Lyon County CES

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Plan of Work: Manage Healthy Weight Throughout the Lifecycle Through Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

According to the World Health Organization, senior adults are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition.   Many of the diseases suffered by older persons are the result of dietary factors, some of which have been operating since infancy. These factors are then compounded by changes that naturally occur with the ageing process.  In an effort to help senior adults learn more about the positive effects of good nutrition on the body, monthly nutrition lessons are conducted at the Lyon County Senior Center.  Participants are able to join in hands-on lessons over topics that address high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, and more.  Both men and women who attended the programs indicated they have used information given in the monthly presentations to reduce fat, sodium, and sugar intake in their diets.  They have also indicated an increase in exercise as well as an interest in trying new and different foods.  Because of the importance of these programs, the senior citizens board awarded a grant to the Lyon County Extension Family and Consumer Sciences program to ensure the continuation of the monthly lessons.
