The Central Kentucky Area Nutrition Agent attended the Smarter Lunchroom Conference at Cornell University in May 2017. After attending the conference with another area agent, they worked with the Regional Specialist for Food and Nutrition to implement the Smarter Lunchroom pilot program to Extension Agents. The Smarter Lunchroom Movement is a project that provides resources in creating a healthy lunchroom atmosphere at little to no cost for the school. Smarter Lunchroom has eight areas that a school can focus on but for the pilot project we selected two areas, focusing on fruit and varying the vegetables. We conducted training with area agents and 10 counties who completed the program. The pilot program was to last nine weeks in each school. We trained the agents on how to conduct the assessments for the schools, fill out the appropriate paperwork, and how to work with the school lunchroom to create a healthier lunchroom. The Central Kentucky Agent had the opportunity to visit two of the pilot schools where she had the opportunity to observe the techniques in practice. The results from the pilot study are still being evaluated.
