Corn Syrup is Everywhere, and is not Evil

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Plan of Work: Nutrition and Food Matters

Outcome: Initial Outcome

I worked with the county SNAP-ED assistant in developing and presenting a program to 2 pre-school classes about corn syrup. We discussed about what corn syrup is, the different types (which we had on hand and let them sample as a pure, straight product), and how it is used. We talked about how pervasive it is in our diets, even in many things we would never think of, many products which we again had on hand for them to try, such as prepared meats, snacks, drinks, etc. We talked about how corm syrup itself is not a bad thing, just that it is in some many items we would never expect it to be in, that we consume much more of it than we might think we do. Some of the feedback from the teachers and some parents, has been that the students shared some of the things we talked about at home and were interested in asking what foods had corn syrup in it, at home and at school.  Over all it seemed to be a successful program just by starting to introduce them to wonder about what is in the foods that they are eating.
