Breathitt County Horsemen’s Association

Author: Ty Back

Planning Unit: Martin County CES

Major Program: Equine

Plan of Work: Developing Leaders in Breathitt County

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Breathitt County Horseman’s Association was formed under the direction of the Breathitt County Agriculture and Natural Resources Program.  After an initial interest meeting saw 30+ individuals attend, the Breathitt County ANR Agent and Program Assistant began scheduling monthly meetings for this group of horseman to come together with a common interest.  As a group, members decided to organize a trail ride in the spring of 2017.  Members worked jointly with the Breathitt County Fiscal Court and the Extension Service to map and clear trails, secure funding necessary for the trail ride overhead costs, and host the event.  The event promoted a family atmosphere with fun and fellowship for all that were in attendance.  Attendees camped for two nights, rode a 10+ mile trail ride, and fellowshipped with other horsemen from as far away as Bowling Green, KY. The members decided that the first ride was such a success, they wanted to organize a fall ride also.  Again, the fall ride was successful with 172 that signed in at the gate for the weekend.  Community members stated that they saw business increase and had many from out of town patronize their business.

With two trail rides in for the season, the Association will be focusing on equine education during the winter months.  The Breathitt County ANR Agent and Program Assistant have scheduled speakers to come in during the coming months related to equine health and nutrition and trail ride safety.  The Breathitt County Horseman’s Association will also be adopting a set of by-laws and electing officers to begin the next year.
