In order to make youth more aware of where their food actually comes from the Lewis County Agents teamed up to host a farm field day for 5th grade youth. This was the third year the program was presented and the first year that we were able to secure a sponsor to cover the cost of lunch for participants. Lewis County Extension Office agents, Lewis County staff, Mason County Horticulture agent, Mason County Program Assistant, Lewis County and Greenup County Farm Bureau, and Rip’s Farm Supply presented a youth farm field day at a local farm owned by Mike Setters. Eight stations were set up and youth rotated from station to station every 13 minutes. The topics addressed at the stations were Dairy food and nutrition, Dairy Cows, Animal by-products, Beef, Fruits and Vegetables, Swine, Poultry and Tractor Safety. Youth also sampled foods related to the topic at several of the stations and when finished were provided lunch cooked by Setters. Attending the Field Day were 192 youth, 20 adults, and 7 Extension Personnel. A questionnaire was developed and 117 youth reported the following: 89 (79%) youth reported they had a better understanding of where their food came from; 67 (57%) Youth reported they better understood where milk and dairy products came from; 113 (97%) said they learned the important role that animals play in our food supply, and 117 (100%) said they understand the role of agriculture in the production of food and fiber. Most students reported they were surprised at the by-products that came from animals, especially that chewing gum has animal fat in it.
