In Edmonson County, the local Farmer's Market participates in both the WIC and Senior Farmer's Market Nutrition Programs. These programs help to provide assistance to many community members in accessing more fresh produce during the growing season. According to the Cabinet for Health and Family Services Data Book (2015) over 21% of Edmonson County Families live below the poverty level. While many people are able to receive benefits to help combat this problem, there are those that fall somewhere in-between programs and get left out.
The SNAP-Ed Assistant in the Edmonson County Extension Office recognized a need in working with residents of the Active Day of Brownsville Medical Adult Day Care Center. Many are unable to access or afford fresh grown produce. After consulting with the Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources she approached the Edmonson County Healthy Communities Coalition about ways to assist these underserved people. Working together, the County Ag Agent and SNAP-Ed Assistant were able to organize a day for the Edmonson County Farmer's Market to set up at the Active Day Center to make it easier for residents to access the market. In addition, the Healthy Communities Coalition approved $300 to buy fresh produce for 30 residents identified by the Active Day staff as being unable to afford to buy themselves.
This Agent coordinated the Farmer's Market set up at Active Day and helped coordinate the purchase of produce from the Edmonson County Market members. More than 30 individuals were positively affected through these efforts.
