Small Changes Lead to Lasting Results

At Main Cross Apartments SNAP-Ed classes began in October of 2018. Each month nutrition lessons, as well as physical activity tips, are shared with the group. During each class a chair exercise is shared, Ruth was always willing to participate and learn all she could. Since beginning, Ruth has only missed one lesson. The classes have taught her to start small.

As research has shown “slow and steady wins the race. Losing weight too fast can take a toll on your mind and body, making you feel sluggish, drained, and sick.” We encourage participants that are trying to lose weight to aim to lose one to two pounds a week so you are losing fat rather than water and muscle. Research has also proven if a person has a social support system (whether this system is family, friends, or a support group), they are more likely to achieve weight loss and lifelong healthy eating.

Ruth is very happy that she is now able to walk a further distance without losing her breath and is down ten pounds just from making healthier food choices. The local farmers market has relocated and is within walking distance of the apartment complex where Ruth lives. Ruth walks to the market to purchase her fresh produce which is also a participant of the double dollars program. She has enjoyed the social time that these classes have brought to her, she is always eager to hear the topic of the day.
