Self esteem is critical in the growing years of children, especially females. Fleming County Extension EFNEP Assistant and staff work with our local Elementary Schools and hosts an after school program called Healthy Divas for 12 weeks. This program is open for any 5 and 6 grade girls at risk or not in any other school activity. The Program Assistant leads this program every week with the help of her Agent, School Principal, and Family Resource Center at the school. This past year there were 21 young ladies that attended this 12 weeks program and not one of them missed a week of the program. They got really involved with the cooking, nutrition, and physical activity each week. Each student was weighed in and given a pedometer at the first class. The girls were asked to keep a log of what they ate and how many steps they had each day for the 12 weeks. The girls started to encourage each other to get up and walk the school track instead of sitting and talking with friends during recess. Additional result was their friends not in the program also started to walk with them. At the 12th week we had our last weigh in with every girl weighing less than they did at the beginning of the class. One young girl lost a total of 12 pounds and the classmates all cheered for her which help her boosted her self-esteem. They were very proud of their selves and the Principle and Family Resource Center awarded them with certificate during the school awards program. Even parents commented how much the students had gained from this program. One parent said her daughter asked her to stop buying junk food and wanted more fruits and vegetables for the family to eat for snacks and so they could get healthy together!
