Planning Unit: Trigg County CES

Major Program: Farmer's Markets

Plan of Work: Food for Everyone

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Cadiz/Trigg County Farmers Market is a great source of fresh vegetables and fruits for our local community.  2018-19 continued with market locations downtown on Wednesday and Saturday mornings and in the parking lot of the Trigg County Health Department on Wednesday afternoons.  The Health Department location has helped to increase the number of WIC vouchers being redeemed from 67% to 94%.

The Extension FCS agent set up informational booths at the Farmers Market once in July and once in Augsut, focusing educational information and recipes on tomatoes and corn, respectively.  180 Farmers Market customers were reached through these promotions

The Extension FCS agent and Cadiz Main Street Manager worked together with the Farmers Market Kids Club through the month of July.  . A grant from the Cadiz Rotary Club was awarded to help fund this program. 5 total sessions were held with activities and tastings geared toward children. Each time they participated, the children receive $5.00 in vouchers to spend on fruits and vegetables at the Farmers Market. Six children participate in the Kids Club, with three having perfect attendance. 100% of the children reported gaining knowledge about fruits and vegetables and an increase in the number of fruits and vegetables they eat.

In March, 2019, the Extension FCS agent facilitated the kick-off of the 2019 Farmers Market season with an orientation meeting for vendors. Seventeen people representing 11 vendors attended.  The Extension FCS agent also serves as the educator for the Farmers Market vendors. Three vendors were certified to participate in the Senior Nutrition Program and two were certified to participate in the WIC Nutrition Program. Two vendors were trained and received Produce Best Practices Certification.
