In Hardin County, livestock represent one of the largest sectors of agriculture. Hay is a crucial part of livestock production. In 2018 we experienced one of the wettest years on record and it made producing high quality high very difficult. That fact, along with the muddy conditions throughout the fall and winter made for multiple cattle losses. LaRue and Hardin County ANR agents worked together to develop a curriculum tailored to our area and used experiences and recommendations from other county agents that have had a similar program in the past.
Educational Response
The ANR agents conducted a series of six 3-hour programs for the Master Haymaker program.
Target Audience
Twenty-four forage and livestock producers participated. They varied in farm size 40 acres to 250 acres of hay production, years of experience (1 year to 40 years), and size of cattle herds (0 to 250).
Outcomes
The participants distinguished warm and cool season crops, compared varieties and discussed which varieties produce the best with the soil and weather of central Kentucky. They reviewed the research of forage storage practices learned the best methods of managing their hay making machinery.
As a result of the programs, 8 producers have had their soil tested and made decisions on soil fertility based on the soil analysis and recommendations from Extension. This will minimize any negative environmental impacts and avoid unnecessary expense in some cases.
Survey evaluations showed that 100% of participants found every course offered to be beneficial to their operations. 23% of those stated it was extremely beneficial. Comments on surveys included:
“Very good class”, “I have learned a lot in these class thanks”, “I have learned a lot in these classes that I can use on the farm”, “Really enjoyed the program”, “Overall very good, glad I came”.
