Plan of Work: Improve communication skills/financial situations & pratical living skills through STEM activities

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Hart County and Caverna School Systems asked the Hart County 4-H Program to work with students in the classrooms on science related topics.  The 4-H Youth Development Agent developed a variety of science related lessons for youth of all ages.  One of those lessons included studying life cycles.  A series of six lessons were developed for youth in kindergarten through 4th grade. The 4-H program also provided a visual hands on learning opportunity for youth to incubate fertile eggs in their classroom.

One hundred and fifty-six students gained knowledge on life-cycles.  98% improved their knowledge on where their food comes from.  94% at the conclusion of the three weeks could identify the anatomy of a chicken and parts of the egg.  They also learned to explain the development of the egg, shell and chicken and how the chicken development over time.

In May a 4th grade teacher from Caverna Elementary called the Hart County Extension Office to say "We were doing K-Prep testing in my classroom today.  During the test a young man raised his hand and said to me I know the answer to this question, we just talked about this in our life cycle lessons with our baby chicks. He was so excited!  I just wanted you all to know your lessons are making an impact on our students and school".  As a result from this program the Hart County 4-H program is helping students  increase their knowledge of science concepts and therefore helping schools increase their testing scores.
