Two Bite Tuesdays

Planning Unit: Boyd County CES

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Two Bite Tuesdays

According to the Center for Disease Control most recent statistics (2017) 19% of children in Kentucky are considered obese.

The Director at a Head Start facility stated that the children were picky eaters and would not try new foods.

Organ Annie and The Organ Wise Guys program along with Dash, MyPlate Superhero puppet, presented MyPlate lesson teaching the children about the five food groups.  Each child was given a copy of the book from the USDA entitled Two Bite Club and the importance of trying new foods.

One boy was particularly impacted by the lesson.  At home, he has asked his mother to purchase new foods for him to try by taking two bites of the new food.  He also asked his teacher if they could start a two bite club in their classroom.

The Director of the facility heard about his request and implemented the club in the entire facility calling the program “Two Bite Tuesday”.  Once a month, on Two Bite Tuesday, the food service introduces a new food to the children and they are required to take two bites of this new food.

Pears and mangoes have been introduced to the children during the first two months of the program.  The pears were liked and will now be served regularly to the children as the fruit component of their meals.  The next planned Two Bite Tuesday will be red peppers.  These will be cut up and served with a low fat dressing for the children to take their two bites.
