Plan of Work: Developing and Empowering Community Leaders for Engagement

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

In 2018, the Johnson County Extension Council identified Youth Leadership and Life Skill Development as a priority for the Plan of Work. To address this issue, County Agent, Dianna Reed worked with 2 teen 4-H members who were interested in attending the 2017-2018 Ky 4-H Youth Issues Conference held in Jabez, KY. The two members learned about civic engagement and how to identify community issues, develop an action plan to address these issues and make a presentation to a mock fiscal court asking for funds to support and implement their action plan. The member's team were successful and received partial grant funding to implement their proposal. After the conference, the members were asked if they enjoyed the conference and learned about community processes. They were very excited to be part of the conference and indicated that they wanted to serve on the 2018-2019 Issues Conference Planning Committee. The 2 teens applied this Spring and both were awarded positions on the 2018-2019 Issues Conference Committee. As a result of their participation in this event, they will be serving in leadership positions for this state level conference and have greatly increased their leadership and personal development skills.
