Growing concerns from the Bell County Extension Council about children not knowing how to prepare food or cook led to implementation of Super Star Chef, a program developed by the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension and The School of Human and Environmental Science, Food and Nutrition. This program teaches students how to make healthy recipes that they can take home and share with their families safely. Super Star Chef was presented by students from the University of Kentucky, majoring in nutrition and dietetics.
Twenty children participated in a series of cooking classes and received information that encouraged them to eat healthier foods, taught them how to use a knife correctly, and the importance of washing your food and hands before starting any recipe. With each of the recipes used in the class, children practiced hand washing and how to hold a knife correctly. They also, practiced proper cutting procedures by holding the knife firmly and always cutting away from the body.
Students were evaluated by a pre and post -test, on what they had learned and what they may try at home as a result of this program. 100 % of participants said they learned the correct way to wash hands. 95 % increased their knowledge about how to read a recipe and know how to make the recipes at home. Several students and parents commented that because of Super Star Chef, the children help out in the kitchen and with meals.
