Developing skills to prepare for the future

Plan of Work: To encourage clientele to make proactive choices as it pertains to their overall health & well-being

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

According to Kentucky 4-H in the 4-H Family and Consumer Sciences projects, youth enhance the personal skills they often learn within the family and home--how to dress to impress; cook a variety of foods; plan a meal; select clothing within the family budget; mend or make one's own clothing; maintain a healthy weight by eating the right way; get along with others; decorate and maintain one's space or room; spend money wisely; create a budget and live within it; practice good manners; make wise decisions; start a business; babysit siblings or the neighbor's children; learn about jobs and what it takes to get a job in a field that matches their interests.  In July of 2017, the Christian County Extension Office interns planned and hosted a Healthy Lifestyles day camp. The purpose behind the three day camp was to develop those skills found within the Family and Consumer Sciences projects. This day camp was designed for middle school aged girls and covered topics like self-awareness, physical activity, mental health, and nutrition. Each day the participants prepared their meals and snacks, learning cooking safety and how to plan a well-balanced meal along with creating a craft that could be entered in the fair.

In June of 2018, requests were made to have another day camp that built on the skills learned during the 2017 program. Therefore, the Middle School project days was developed. Participants learned food preservation skills through canning salsa and strawberry jam, baking skills by preparing cakes and muffins to enter in the fair, and budgeting and selecting produce by visiting the Farmer’s Market. Each 4-Her also created entries for various fair categories that developed skills such as home design and décor and assembling an invitation and thank you note. Sixty percent of the participants that attended the Healthy Lifestyles camp in 2017 returned for the Middle School project days.4-H member works on room design planParticipants learn how to properly preserve foods through canning.
