Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Knowing that physical exercise and nutrition is an important part of our goal to a healthier lifestyle in our county, the Floyd County Cooperative Extension Service, Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) and the Floyd County Library partnered together to offer nutrition/exercise classes as an incentive to reach this goal.

The Food and Physical Activity Entry Questionnaire was given at the beginning    of classes. There were four (4) participants enrolled. Only one participant met recommendations for daily physical exercise needs.  Lessons were taught using My Plate on healthier food choices.Exercising at least thirty to sixty minutes a day and cutting down on soda and other extra calorie foods from our diet.

Each participant was instructed how to use their iPhone to down load and use the exercise plan of their choice to help with their exercise regimen. They chose walking more, parking farther away from the entry of a store, going to the park more often, and even dancing while cleaning house. Participants would report their progress at the beginning of each class. The group meet once a month for eleven months. A post-test was given which revealed that seventy-four (74%) percent of the group were now meeting their recommended daily exercise and nutrition needs. One participant reported that she was so proud of the fact in only a few short months while talking the class she had lost sixty-one pounds and had never felt better.
