According to County Health Rankings and Roadmaps the number of pregnant teens in Bullitt County from 2007-2013 was 549. This was based on the number of births per 1,000 female population ages 15-19. In order to help young mothers and their children eat healthy,to work towards a healthier lifestyle the Bullitt County County Cooperative Extension Service Expanded Food Nutrition Education Program assistant and the Bullitt County Public Schools TAPP have partnered for the fourth year to work towards that goal. This is the second year the girls have been coming to the Bullitt County Extension Office so that they can cook their own lunch. We have been using the Expanded Food and Nutrition Calendar recipes and using lessons from the NEP curriculum. One of the recipes picked was the sweet potato chili. The girls were a little skeptical about it but after eating it they all decided that they liked it and would make it again at h The following month when we met one of the girls told me that she had made the chili at home so her Mom could try it. At first her Mom refused to try it but after the daughter told her to try it she will like it she gave in. She ended up eating two bowls and said that she would look at some of the other recipes in the calendar to try. I told the girls that by trying new recipes at home that they are also helping their entire family to eat healthier and branch out in trying new things. This also is a good role model for their children. . |
