Rehab for Change

Author: Laykin Smith

Planning Unit: KSU Administration

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Hazel Hills is  a drug rehab facility located in Owingsville Kentucky which houses females who struggle with addiction. Kentucky State University's SNAP Education Program has partnered with the facility to provide nutrition education and hands on life skills to clients. The local SNAP Ed Program Assistant makes weekly visits to the facility to share ways of improving their health through nutrition. Weekly classes consist of topics such as budgeting, food safety, reading labels,  breakfast, meal planning and much more. With each class there is a recipe to be prepared, allowing participants the ability to learn first hand how to prepare healthy meals. The participants loved the recipes so much that they worked with the food service director to implement change in the kitchen. All of the recipes were supplied to the director who has started serving these foods as part of their menu. By making the change to healthier  recipes positive changes have happened.

1. The number of clients consuming vegetables has increased.

2. The number of clients consuming whole grains has increased.

3. The number of clients that have learned healthy can be tasty can has increased.

"The girls are really enjoying your classes, it's good for them to be able to do basic life tasks while they are in recovery. This is getting them ready to go back into the community as successful members of society." - Hazel Hills Food Service Director
