Christmas for Kids

Author: Deborah Stumbo

Planning Unit: Pike County CES

Major Program: Equine

Plan of Work: Agritourism

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Eastern Kentucky has the highest food insecurity in the United States.  In Pike County, 11,750 individuals (18.7% of county population) are not sure where their next meal will come from. 71% of the population of Pike County qualify for SNAP, WIC, Free School Meals, CSFP & TEFAP. Even though Pike County has such a high Poverty rate, there are still kids that fall through the cracks and will have virtually no Christmas without intervention.

The "Broken Trail" trail riders group sponsored 3 trail rides in 2018 to raise funds to support the "Christmas for Kids" project.  This project provides 2 gifts appropriate for the child, 3 outfits suitable for school apparel, and Christmas Dinner for their families with Santa Claus.  The project brings riders from 5 states-- Kentucky (both local and across state), Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.  This good deed also adds tourism $20,000 in tourism dollars to the area.
