Grant County KY has an Adult obesity rate of 35.6% and a physical activity rate of 30.2%. . The Grant County Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Education Program (SNAP) in conjunction with the Sherman Elementary School FRSYC worked with a group of low income families to encourage healthy nutrition and exercise habits. The families were instructed in the Healthy Choices Curriculum. With the assistance of Master Food Volunteers, they had lessons on My Plate, Meal Planning, Budgeting, Food Safety, Reading Labels, Know Your Limits, Think Your Drink, Breakfast, and Physical Activity. The adults were given exercise videos from the University of Kentucky and pedometers to encourage their families to increase physical activity. They were also given the locations of all of the county’s parks and the walking tracks in Grant County which have been developed by FFLAG, (Fitness for Life Around Grant County). The families prepared and sampled healthy recipes, planned meals as a group, made grocery lists, read and compared labels and practiced using a meat thermometer. By the end of the series, 100% of the adults made a positive diet change in at least one food group. Additionally, 70% improved physical activity. There were 80% of the families who used a food thermometer more often and improved their food safety by 70% thawing food on a counter less often. They also improved their food resource management with 78% making lists before shopping and 70% planning meals and comparing food prices. One participant stated “We have started doing some activity as a family after supper to get us moving.”
