Off to the Fair

Planning Unit: Garrard County CES
Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
During the course of the school year the 4 H cooking club prepares, learns and executes lessons in the kitchen. The 4 H participants learn to read recipes, follow directions, use basic kitchen knowledge to prepare recipes for tasting. Each year the children are encouraged to put an entry into our local fair. This year we had several that put entries in the fair and a few that won. One in particular won not only on the local level but a 3rd place ribbon in the State of KY fair. Learning to be successful in the kitchen, knowing that you poses the knowledge to read, follow and execute a recipe and it be enjoyed by others is a great self esteem boost for young people. By taking the skills they were taught at the local level the child received rewards for their efforts on a state level as well.
