Easy to talk to

Author: Lisa Lamb

Planning Unit: Garrard County CES

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Through out the year the local Senior Citizen center and the local Extension office work together to provide nutrition education to the seniors at the center. Sally is a regular at the center as well as any and all classes we conduct there. Sally sees me as a young person and sometimes she will get quite lively in discussions during the lesson or she will ask me questions to try and throw me off my game. I consider it a great relationship and she helps keep the classes moving and keeps the conversation going with the group.

Sally also attends our local Farmer's Market, where I am every week with nutrition information for the community. One day Sally comes up to my stand at the market and sits down beside me. Sally asks if her "ribbing me" during class bothers me and that she is only kidding when she does it. I assure her that it does not bother me at all and that I think it helps keep our classes lively and fun.

Sally begins to share with me some personal things that are going on with her and her family, and she begins to cry. I sit and listen as she tells me her story and try to share some similar situations with my own family. She ask me if I will say a prayer with her and I do and we share a quiet moment together just she and I. Sally hugs me and tells me "thank you for listening to an old lady ramble on" I assure her anytime she needs an ear I will be glad to listen. Sally held my hand and said I am glad you came into our center, you are just really easy to talk to.

To me that one sentence means the world to me, that someone who I did not know a year ago took the time to tell me that I am easy to talk to and that she enjoys coming to my classes. That makes me feel successful in my job.
