The obesity epidemic threatens the quality and years of life among Kentuckians. Obese individuals are at increased risk for many chronic health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. According to the 2014 CEDIK county profile report, the obesity rate in Letcher County is 38.9%. In addition, 37.2% of individuals in Letcher County report being physically inactive.
The Letcher County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences offered a 12 week in person walking program. Participants used pedometers, NikeRunClub app, or their personal walking trackers to track their steps.
Completed post surveys showed:
100% gained knowledge about the benefits of time spent in physical activity.
100% demonstrated spending time in physical activity.
100% reported the adoption of physical activity practices (30 minutes or more per day).
Testimonies include: “My legs feel better”, and “I feel so much better after I started the walking program and I hope that we do another walking program in the future”.
