According to the Centers for disease control the prevalence of obesity was 39.8 % and affected about 93.3 million US adults. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer that are some of the leading causes of preventable, premature death.
The Owsley County Extension Service partnered with the Owsley County Recreational Center to provide a nutritional and physical challenge to becoming a fitter you. Over a span of six weeks, eleven participants with ages ranging from 56-75 gained knowledge in; budgeting, healthier alternatives, meal planning, portion sizes and food safety. The main focus was directed to nutrition, becoming more active and losing weight. A total of 36 pounds was lost during the challenge, from the eleven participants an average of six thousand steps was accounted for per participant daily. The challenge brought about families being active together, and involving children. Participants can't wait to participate in another challenge.
