Success Story # 2– Better Choices for a Healthier You

The Jackson County Cooperative Extension office partnered with the Tyner Family Resource Center to offer a program called “Better Choices for a Healthier You”. This six week program was offered at the Tyner Elementary School. The targeted audience was volunteer parents and several of the Tyner School staff members. SNAP-Ed’s objectives were teaching nutritional education, cooking demonstrations and encouraging healthier eating habits. The Tyner Family Resource Center provided a certified instructor, which taught a 30 minute exercise program after each nutritional lesson. Participants enjoyed new recipes and set healthy goals including weight loss. Nine participants completed the program. Of those surveyed 85 percent lost weight and have incorporated physical activity into their lifestyle.  100% stated they made at least one healthy lifestyle change because of this program. Parents and staff stated that they learned how to make healthier choices, incorporate more physical activity and learned how to prepare new recipes for their children to enjoy.
