According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse andAlcoholism more than 10 percent of U.S. children live with a parent withalcohol problems, according to a 2012 study. Children are being removed fromthese homes in Wolfe County, to help address this issue the Wolfe CountyCooperative Extension Service, SNAP-Ed Assistant partnered with Kentucky RiverCommunity Care and a program called Solutions. Solutions is a Substance AbuseTreatment for Women that provides trauma informed care. These women are alsoworking towards independence from public assistance. The Wolfe CountyCooperative Extension Service, SNAP-Ed Assistant offered 7 lessons for theparticipants using the Healthy Choices for Every Body curriculum. Some of thelessons that we offered included, budgeting food money, planning meals, knowingwhen to limit salt, fat and sugars and the benefits of breakfast for them andtheir children. The women in the program prepared and sampled meals that theycould make with their families. They learned ways to budget their money forfood, how to plan meals, and write a grocery list. All participants showed a100% change as to how many meals they cooked during the week, comparing foodprices, planning meals before shopping, and making a list before shopping. Onemother stated, “I can’t wait for my baby boy to come home so we can makeAmazing Pancakes together.” Another participant stated, “I love sitting down onSunday night and using the meal planning calendar I received to plan my mealsfor the week, I even let my little girl plan a meal during the week.”
