Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Recently the on-site nurse for the Newport Aquarium reached out to the Campbell County Extension Nutrition Education Program to obtain healthy nutrition information for the two hundred plus employees. Over the course of the four month program, twenty six people gave up multiple lunch periods to attend the Healthy Choices for Every Body series. Other great initiatives started as a result of the program such as a walking club that met weekly to encourage more physical activity to go with the improved changes in eating. The Aquarium was a great partner as they offered incentives such as a drawing for play tickets to encourage staff to attend. And upon learning about the healthy initiative, a local grocery store offered a coupon for a free product at their store to anyone who attended the series. Even those who were not able due to working different shifts benefited through the healthy recipes that were posted in the break room along with health tips that were shared throughout the SNAP-Ed Food and Nutrition calendar. One employee even started bringing in her own healthy recipes to share with friends and co-workers. By the end of the series, there was a greater sense of comradery and a shared desire to lead a healthier lifestyle. According to the beginning and ending data from a national reporting system, this worksite wellness program resulted in 100% of participants made improvement in two or more diet quality indicators and 75% said they had made small changes to be active more often as a result of participating in the Healthy Choices series.
