Title: Where are the Kids? In the Kitchen Cooking!

Major Program: 2066 – Accessing Nutritious Foods (General)

Outcome Type: Intermediate

A youth group at St. Vincent De Paul in Jefferson County participated in an after-school program using MyPlate curriculum. Many of the youth were not familiar with cooking equipment and tools and the cooking process, in general. The youth participated in 6 different lessons, which were organized by the SNAP-Ed (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) Assistant with the Cooperative Extension Service. Food was prepared at each one hour lesson.

The youth learned how to measure using different ingredients and how they can be substituted for other ingredients.  They practiced this by making the Pumpkin Spice Muffins, using a vegetable instead of vegetable oil.

As a result, 67% of youth chose healthier snacks more often. The youth have applied what they have learned from the classes and want to help their parents prepare food at home. The program coordinator shared that parents were commenting on how their children were helping in the kitchen at home after taking the class!
