Knott County Family and Consumer Science agent presented “Do It Yourself Fruit Bouquets for Centerpieces or Gifts” to 21 participants. Participants learned nutritional information about fruit, how to creatively include fruit into a meal, how to encourage family members to add fruit to their diet, what to look for when purchasing fruit, seasonal purchasing of fruit, food safety when preparing fruits, why fruits are important to health and what to look for when reading a nutrition label. Participants also mastered the skills of cutting and shaping fruit into flowers. Follow up evaluation indicated that 71% learned new ways to creatively include fruits into family meals. 72% reported new knowledge about what to look for when purchasing fresh fruit and what season to find the best quality. 71% reporting learning additional nutritional information about fruit, what to look for on a food label and to check for carbohydrates for those with diabetes. 94% indicated they plan to include more fruits into their daily meals and to look for higher density nutrients in their food selections. Participants reported planning to incorporate fruit into meals to not only help their health goals but to also improve their family members health. One participant reported “that learning about fruit in this creative way helped me understand how I can have a healthier diet”. Participants said the activity would be fun to try with young family members or to include a fruit centerpiece for a holiday meal.
