orchard management field day

Planning Unit: Bath County CES

Major Program: Commercial Horticulture

Plan of Work: Diversification and Alternatives

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Extension offices in District 1 held 2 field days related to apple production for both homeowner and commercial producers.  The field days utilized University of Kentucky specialists and agents to introduce participants to various aspects of apple production.  Topics covered in the spring field day included a hands on tree grafting workshop, wildlife control options in the orchard and early season disease control.  The fall field day provided hands on learning activities related to apple tree pruning, late season disease control and variety selection.  Participants to the field day who have an orchard or who may be considering  an orchard should come away from the event with a much better understanding of the principals of orchard management and what resources are available to them through the cooperative extension service.  Some basic understanding in the benefits of pruning to fruit development, selecting varieties for your market, grafting for size and disease resistance, disease identification and control and insect identification and control are a few of the skills participants gained through the event.  Fruit production can be a area of diversification to many producers and fits a niche that has been underserved in recent years.
