According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention 46.2% of adults reported consuming fruit less than one time daily and 24.9% of adults reported consuming vegetables less than one time daily. The Magoffin County Cooperative Extension Service’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Assistant partnered with the Agriculture and Natural Resource (ANR) Extension to expand the knowledge of the community on the importance of local grown products at the Farmers Market. The Farmers Market growers start early each year meeting and planning the market season. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program assistant uses the Kentucky Proud Recipe cards to show the different ways their produce can be used by the consumers. Participates observe a food demonstration and sample of the recipes. An average of fifteen participants from across all age ranges attended the classes. Of the twenty Farmers Market Produces 95% liked the recipes and provide the Assistant with their produce so it can be a featured recipe for the market season. 85% of the Farmers Market producers stated they had learn something new that applied to safe food handling. However, 100% of the attendees who participated in the dominations said they had learned a new skill and would applied that skill at home. Working with the Farmers Market is a great way to build a program within the community and establish lifelong friendships.
