Teachers from the 1st and 2nd grades at Nancy Elementary School in Pulaski County had noticed that their students were not properly washing their hands before eating. They were concerned that the children could get sick and spread germs as well. They called the Pulaski County Extension Office and ask for someone to come out to the school and teach "How to Wash Your Hands".
The SNAP-Ed Assistant went to the school and taught the children why and when it was important to wash their hands. The Assistant also demonstrated how to wash their hands using warm water and soap and scrubbing for 20 seconds. Glow-germ lotion was applied to the children's hands before they went to wash them so that they could see for themselves if they washing properly. Seventy-five children participated in a hand washing pretest and post -test and the post test results showed an improvement of 47% in knowing when and how to wash their hands properly. The teachers at the Nancy Elementary School were well pleased with the hand washing activity used with their students. Several months later the teachers told the assistant that the children are still taking the time to wash their hands 20 seconds with warm water and soap before going to lunch.
